Our Curriculum

Statement of Intent

At St. Begh’s Catholic Junior School, we understand the importance of a well-rounded, fulfilling curriculum to prepare all pupils for the next stage of education, and for their future as citizens of the UK.

We aim to provide a lively and engaging curriculum that excites our children and helps them to be endlessly curious about our amazing world. We want our curriculum to, 'engage heart, head and hands'. (Vision Statement.)

We are aware that much local employment has a science and engineering focus and therefore we prepare our children for these opportunities by ensuring that maths, science and technology education is strong.

We are clear that reading holds to key to all learning and therefore ensure that the curriculum allows children to gain the skills and enjoy app[ying those skills in all aspects of school and wider life.

Our Curriculum Statement describes how we deliver our curriculum in each subject, including Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education. (See our 'Policies' page for a link to our Curriculum Statement.)

Promoting the ‘Fundamental British Values'

Citizens of the UK should:

  • Respect and obey the law.
  • Respect the rights of others, including their right to their own opinions.
  • Treat others with fairness.
  • Look after yourself and your family.
  • Look after the area in which you live and the environment.

At St. Begh’s we view these ‘fundamental British values’ as being human and universal values and being at one with our Christian values of Faith, Respect, Responsibility, Self-control, Honesty and Integrity, Kindness and Compassion, Thankfulness, Patience and Perseverance, Peace and Humility, Loyalty and Commitment. We are aware that we have a duty to help prevent any of our pupils from being radicalised in any extreme beliefs and believe that our curriculum successfully prepares our pupils for life in modern Britain.

At St. Begh’s Catholic Junior School, we promote ‘fundamental British values’ throughout our curriculum and in particular through our PSHE programme, RE curriculum and prayer and liturgy.

Examples of how each year group promotes these values and prepares our pupils for life in modern Britain, can be seen in the curriculum plans published on our website.
